Milking

A few pictures of our milking process. The Dwarf Nigerian Milk Goats are so short I have to use one of my stainless steel pans instead of a milking pail.

Any pan or utensil that comes in contact with the milk is sanitized before each milking session. The goat's udder is washed with an udder wash before milking, cleaned and treated with teat dip after milking. The milk is strained and then chilled to 40 degrees in 30 minutes by being placed in an ice water bath

The goats eat their non-medicated feed while on the milking stand, but always demand a cookie for a treat at the end of milking. Records are kept to show how much milk is given each time, as well as other notations as light eating or heat cycles

This is Glaze, Sunshine's dam. Glaze was an excellent milk goat who went home with a friend to be a "nanny" for her new goats..
