Coop

Here's some pictures of our chicken coop. It's made with 2 separate inside coops and a large enclosed outside run. The run is completely covered to protect the chickens from coyotes, and we just open the door to allow them to free range during the day.. We compost everything in this area - chickens are great composters!

This is the meat chicken coop area. There's 19 three weeks old baby chicks in the meat coop at this point. After the meat chickens no longer need a brooder environment, the chicken run area is divided with chicken wire. This way the meat chickens and the laying flock can both use the chicken run area. They go out separate doors to free range.

Here's the enclosed chicken run area. We jokingly refer to our coop as "the chicken palace"

This is the laying chickens area.

These nest boxes were horrible to put together, but worth the effort (I can say that after they're  done, of course!) I had a broody hen in one of the nests or I would have hosed the boxes off before this picture.

Nosey, one of the barn cats, is  just thinking of how good those chickens would taste! We do leave holes in the coop where the cats can get in and mouse the coop, but I've never found them inside -the cats know how fierce a chicken can be. (Nosey went on to heaven in the summer of 2000)

And here's the broody hen with her separate food and water. These chicks were brooded out in the fall of 99.
