Chickens

We use only non-medicated feed and do not use antibiotics on our chickens. Our goal is to be as natural and healthy as possible. We do sell extra eggs for eating and incubation, as our eggs are fertilized.

The laying hens are not free range, as our coyote population is too great here, but we built a chicken palace for them, with an exercise yard. The chicken run is where all of our vegetable scraps are composted. Chickens are great composters and will even pick scrap bones clean. The horse's bedding and manure also goes in the chicken run for composting. Several times a year, as needed, I run a small tiller through the compost in the chicken run and then remove the compost for use on the
gardens.

Our meat chickens are Cornish X Rock Cross. We use the pastured poultry method of raising them, again with no antibiotics or hormones. There's a picture of the pasture pen on the
Homestead Gathering Page . We "grow" the meat chickens for our own use and also to sell.

This video clip shows how fast a natural breakfast of grasshoppers disappear!
